A highly anticipated Transformers game in the works for the past few years has been pulled offline. It’s another recent flop for the iconic ’80s franchise.
Developer Splash Damage (known for games like Brink and Dirty Bomb) has officially announced that work on the upcoming Transformers: Reactivate game has officially wrapped. As reported by game boltthe developer cites a shift in focus to other projects as the reason for the game’s cancellation. Splash Damage included in its statement on Twitter that the cancellation of Reactivate may lead to imminent layoffs.
Fans have been waiting for the next game since the end of 2022. ScreenRant spoke of rumors about the new Transformers game that will be called Transformers: Rise, whose development was initiated by the studio Certain Affinity. It would get the new name Transformers: Reactivate in a reveal at The Game Awards, with Splash Damage taking on the project. Not much was known since the reveal trailer, other than that Reactivate appears to be a third-person action game similar to High Moon’s Cybertron titles. The gameplay has also been leakedgiving players a glimpse of what could have been in this TF game.
As mentioned above, this cancellation is another recent blow to the franchise. Reactivate’s abrupt ending comes after the Transformers One animated film failed financially at the box office despite rave reviews, painting an uncertain future for any sequel (via comic). The rest of the new year and the years to come will see if the franchise can bounce back, whether in movies, television, or games.
