Genki claims ‘Switch 2’ Joy-Con can be removed by ‘brute force’

Accessory maker Genki has really given Nintendo the middle finger in recent days, choosing to openly show off its planned accessories for the yet-unannounced ‘Switch 2’ during CES 2025.

Now, in a new interview with The edgeGenki co-founder and CEO Eddie Tsai divulged a few more details about the console itself, including the new magnetic Joy-Con controllers. According to Tsai, pressing the release buttons on the back of the Joy-Con causes a small pin to protrude from the side of the Joy-Con, moving it away from the main body enough to break the magnetic connection.

However, Tsai also claims that users can remove the Joy-Con with brute force, although we’ll simply recommend up front that you probably shouldn’t even attempt to do this. With active magnets, the Joy-Con are said to be secure enough for regular use, and the release buttons separate the controllers from the Switch 2 with ease.

Naturally, Tsai didn’t specify how he found out about these details, but we’re willing to bet that Nintendo hasn’t given Genki the go-ahead to reveal so much information to the public. It is likely that the company has managed to obtain this information through other means; according Laura Kate DaleYou may even have been able to purchase a working Switch 2 through the black market. Wow, Genki.

Handling Genki’s ‘Switch 2’ mockup, The Verge claims that its size is overall more comparable to the Steam Deck than the original Switch, although because the new console’s Joy-Cons are not as pronounced or ergonomic as the Steam Deck grips, it’s still noticeably smaller.

And so, we continue waiting. Nintendo has promised an announcement before the end of March 2025, but it really looks like something may be on the horizon. Keep your eyes and ears open, friends.
